Reflective Staining
Reflective staining is a phrase used to describe the staining or marks that appear on the surface
of paving slabs – usually the more porous materials such as sandstone and granite, when
moisture and minerals rise through the slabs from voids in the laying bed, which hold water.
This moisture is drawn up through the slab by capillary action and warmth, literally, reflecting
or mirroring the shape of the void under the slab.
These patchy marks spoil the appearance of the slabs, and there is no easy solution. It is
generally sensible to take up and relay new slabs over a full mortar bed, using a full coverage
of bonding mortar to protect the slabs and stick them firmly to their base.
