Lightweight Concrete Products

Lightweight Concrete Products

A new range of products called Concretion Lightweight Concrete Paving Slabs/steps has been introduced this year. They are claimed to have a much lower carbon footprint than standard concrete, yet still be as strong and long-lasting. In previewing them, we have learned of them from the UK supplier, and from the specification, look to be a sensible replacement in many ways.

Obvious aspects such as lower transport costs and ease of handling would appear to recommend the innovation into the market place. Over 50% lighter than concrete, available in various sizes from 1000mm x 1000mm x 100/70/50mm thicknesses, down to 600mm x 600mm, and in a range of colours (grey, beige, pale and smoke) the paving slabs are made from fibre reinforced concrete.

They are also available as ‘Floating Steps’, in sizes ranging from 1800mm x 500mm x 120mm thickness, down to 900mm x 350mm x 120mm, they can create flights of steps within the British Standard dimensions.

These products – slabs and steps – should not be butt jointed, having dimensional tolerances of +/- 3mm, but should be laid with a minimum 5mm gap between the units.

As concrete products, albeit lightweight versions, they will take a long time to fully cure and harden, and slight variations in colour may occur during that period, which is the same for any concrete unit.

Reinforced with fibres to give good cracking resistance and high flexural strength, UV sealants will help to preserve the colours if desired. Manufactured to slip resistance tolerances, this new material should prove very interesting to designers and contractors.
