Paving – British Standards
For many years, there has been much debate in landscaping circles regarding the relevance of British Standards in paving. Everyone was aware that written standards existed, but believed they only related to ‘commercial’ or local authority works. Indeed, they were produced precisely for that purpose, although the intention was to establish these working standards for all projects involving ‘commercial’ contractors, the topic became more and more nebulous within the industry, and largely ignored by many, even professional landscapers.
Over the past decade or so, the paving industry has seen huge developments, with many new products coming on to the market, and new uses for traditional materials such as porcelain, now coming out from the kitchen and dining rooms into the garden, a revised and relevant British Standard was required to cope with this new reality. Hence the ‘new’ Standards have been developed over the past few years, to become the benchmark by which we will all have to work with.
The British Standards for paving works – known as ‘pavements’, includes footpaths, patios, pavements, car parks and other areas of hard standing, are BS7533:101 and BS7533:102.
BS7533:101 came out in late 2021 and its purpose was to provide best practise guidance for the design of modular pavements. Pavements designed to BS7533:101 have an expected lifespan in excess of 40 years.
BS7533:101 was unique as it was the first-time domestic pavements had been included in the BS7533 standard. (For reference, domestic pavements fall in to categories 1-3 of the Standard.)
BS 7533-102 is a segment of the British Standard that specifically delineates the guidelines and specifications for the installation of modular paving systems. Developed to ensure high- quality, durable, and safe pavements, this standard provides comprehensive instructions for utilizing a variety of materials – such as natural stone, concrete, porcelain and clay—in both bound and unbound configurations.
At its core, BS 7533-102 focuses on the meticulous planning, execution, and maintenance of paved areas. This includes domestic installations, pedestrian footways, heavily trafficked zones, and various landscaping applications. By establishing a set of standards, it aims to ensure uniformity and quality across different paving projects.
It delineates the necessary criteria for selecting appropriate materials, taking into account factors like load-bearing capacity, aesthetic appeal, and durability. This involves choosing paving units with suitable compressive strength and wear resistance based on the intended usage.
The new Standards will provide designers and specifiers with detailed specification to work with, ensuring that the new reality becomes part of everyday life in the world of landscaping, thus setting the benchmark which we can all understand and avoid failed projects through misunderstandings.
The standard also extensively covers installation techniques. It specifies the methods for laying these paving units, including bedding materials, jointing compounds, and surface finishes. Whether it’s the use of mortar, sand, or proprietary systems, the standard provides detailed instructions to ensure a robust and lasting installation.
BS 7533-102 further addresses construction practices, outlining guidelines for laying patterns, joint widths, and edge restraints. It offers various configurations and arrangements for different applications, ensuring adaptability while maintaining structural integrity. Moreover, it includes provisions for surface water drainage, offering solutions to mitigate potential issues related to water accumulation.

In addition to the installation process, the standard also emphasizes the importance of regular maintenance. It outlines measures for periodic inspections, cleaning procedures, and repairs to uphold the longevity and performance of the paved area, thereby reducing complaints from clients who do not appreciate the importance of following Standards.
