Concrete Picture Framing in Paving Slabs
Concrete picture framing is a common discolouration effect visible around the edges of paving flags, often giving the appearance of a shaded “frame.”
Also known in the industry as framing effect, moisture banding, or differential moisture staining, the phenomenon results from uneven curing. For paving to achieve consistent strength, density, and colour, it must cure uniformly. When hydration and drying occur at different rates across a slab, the result is tonal variation and edge shading.
The effect is especially noticeable when paving is newly laid on a wet mortar bed but can remain present for decades.

Causes of Concrete Picture Framing
1. Chamber & Palletising and Shrink Wrapping
After manufacture, paving flags are stacked, palletised, and shrink-wrapped. This creates microclimates within the pack:
- Slabs at the edges are exposed to more air, temperature variation, and UV.
- Slabs in the centre retain higher humidity, curing more slowly.
- Condensation inside wrapping can collect near slab edges, keeping them wetter.
This contrast in curing conditions between edge and centre produces tonal variation. It is worth noting that differential curing can also happen in the curing chambers.
2. Concrete Dispersal into Moulds
The way concrete is placed and compacted into moulds also influences curing behaviour:
- Uneven Compaction: Edges often receive more vibration, producing denser, slower-curing zones.
- Bleed Water Movement: Excess water collects unevenly, altering hydration rates.
- Cement Paste Migration: Fine particles and paste tend to concentrate at mould edges, creating colour differences.
- Local Heat of Hydration: Denser areas may develop slightly more heat, accelerating curing relative to the centre.
Together, these factors cause the edges of a slab to cure differently from the centre, resulting in a framed appearance. This type of shading is often permanent, though it tends to become less obvious over time.
Controlled Curing Methods
Most concrete paving is cured in chambers rather than left to air cure. These are controlled environments using steam or mist, heat, and sometimes CO₂ to accelerate hydration and improve durability. A curing chamber functions much like a large controlled “steam room,” designed to ensure flags, blocks, or kerbs reach the required strength and performance before leaving the factory.
