Riven Sandstone Maintenance & Aftercare Guide – How to Clean, Protect and Maintain Sandstone Paving

Riven sandstone is a popular natural paving material used for patios, pathways, driveways and cladding, valued for its characterful texture and appearance. However, due to its riven surface and natural porosity, correct riven sandstone maintenance and aftercare is essential to prevent staining, algae growth and long-term deterioration. This guide outlines routine, annual and longer-term care to help protect your investment.

Natural riven sandstone projects may include footpaths, patios, driveways, features and cladding in a domestic garden, laid in one or more of several different patterns, styles or thicknesses. The riven texture of the surface may trap dirt, making regular upkeep important.

Routine Maintenance – Weekly or Monthly, Dependent on Site Conditions

Sweeping – by hand broom – removes leaves, dirt and detritus, grit or organic debris to prevent matter from decomposing and causing stains or encouraging moss and algae.

Remove any stains, or potential stains, with a stiff brush and a suitable proprietary cleaner. In the case of oil stains, wine, sap or tannins from leaf fall, this should be done promptly, as sandstone is porous, and easily stained permanently.

Remove any weed growth within and on the surface, using brushes, not hard metallic tools as these may damage the surface. Use a proprietary weed killer, designed for use on patios following the manufacturers recommendations. Take care not to damage the pointing.

Annual Maintenance – Depending on the Site Conditions

In the Spring and Autumn, clean the surface using warm soapy water with a stiff brush. It may be necessary to use a mild anti-algae solution following the manufacturers instructions and clean thoroughly using a low-pressure hose. Do not use a power jet nozzle, as this may cause minor delamination of the surface.

Having cleaned the stone, carefully check for any cracking, fissures, signs of damage to the paving/cladding and pointing/jointing.

Winter care should include pressure washing using a low powered washer, (less than 1500 psi) with a wide-angle nozzle, held at least 45cm away from the surface. Avoid power jetting to pointing/jointing areas.

Avoid use of any acids, de-icing salts or chemicals including vinegar and bleach materials.

Longer Term Maintenance – As Required, According to Site Conditions

Riven sandstone may be sealed before laying, although many contractors prefer to leave such operations until the stone has settled in and become lightly weathered.

If required, riven sandstone may be sealed periodically to protect against moisture penetration, staining and algae. Frequency depends on site conditions and use. Exterior horizontal surfaces may require sealing every two years, whilst vertical areas may last for five years or more. Ensure the stone is totally dry before applying a high-quality, breathable impregnating sealant. (Always test on an inconspicuous area first, leave for 24 hours before continuing to ensure you are happy with the results, as colours may be enhanced).

Check pointing and replace as required to prevent moisture from getting under the slabs or cladding.

To ensure the longest possible life for your investment, keep a diary/log of the site conditions and works programme undertaken.

ALL NATURAL MATERIALS CHANGE COLOUR AFTER EXPOSURE TO SUNLIGHT AND THE ELEMENTS. Any changes should not be seen as defects.
