What Homeowners Really Want When Choosing a Driveway Contractor: Insights from 28,818 UK Reviews
What homeowners really want when choosing a driveway contractor often differs from what many landscaping businesses believe. Based on the analysis of 28,818 Google reviews from almost 700 UK driveway and paving companies, this article explores the factors that influence purchasing decisions, build trust and help contractors win more work without competing on price alone.
I write ads for driveway firms, and like most of us I used to guess what buyers cared about. So over the last few months my team and I read 28,818 Google reviews of UK driveway and paving firms, around 700 companies, and sorted every comment by theme in the homeowners’ own words. Plenty of it would never occur to us to put in an advert, and some of it explains why certain firms stay booked out while others chase work.
The first surprise is how low the bar has dropped. “Turned up when they said they would” appears more often than attention to detail or quality of workmanship. One reviewer’s highest praise was simply “a contractor who turns up on time.” People have been let down so often that reliability now reads as a luxury.
One thing that came through clearly in the research is that homeowners are far less price-driven than most driveway company owners assume, and the quote visit is what decides it. Turn up when you said, measure properly, show you have understood the job, and price slips down the list. Get it wrong, arrive late or “pluck a figure out of thin air,” and suddenly you are just a number on a page being compared against cheaper ones. The visit doesn’t support the quote. It sets how much the quote is even allowed to matter.
That is also why the cheapest quote keeps losing. To a nervous homeowner spending five figures, cheap reads as risk. As one put it, “cheapest isn’t always best, the cheaper quote we had, that company never responded.” Their deepest fear is not price at all. It is being ghosted once the money clears, with snags left unfixed.
And where they place the value surprised me. Homeowners quote what neighbours and passers-by said about the drive more than they describe the drive itself. One mentioned five neighbours asking who did it. You are not selling a surface. You are selling the moment someone stops to ask who did it.
The thread through all of it is trust. Buyers are not comparing specifications, they are deciding who to believe. So turn up when you say, measure with care, answer the fears nobody else names, and leave every site spotless. Do that, and you stop chasing work and start being chosen.
