Planning Drainage for Your Paving: Avoiding Standing Water and Future Problems
When people think about paving, they often focus on the choice of slabs, blocks or setts. However, one of the most important factors in the long-term success of any patio, pathway or driveway is drainage. No matter how well paving is installed, if water cannot drain away effectively, problems are likely to follow.
Standing water can lead to staining, algae growth, slippery surfaces, frost damage and, in some cases, deterioration of the construction layers beneath the paving. Good drainage planning helps protect both the appearance and performance of the finished pavement.
British Standard BS 7533 places significant emphasis on drainage because water affects every part of a paving installation, from the surface itself through to the foundation layers below. The aim is simple: water should be able to leave the paved area efficiently without creating ponding or saturation within the pavement structure.
Why Paving Drainage Matters
Rainwater does not simply sit on the surface of paving.
Some water runs across the surface until it reaches a drainage point. In addition, water can enter the pavement through joints in unbound paving and through small cracks or gaps that may develop over time in bound construction. If that water becomes trapped within the pavement structure, it can affect both appearance and durability.
Common consequences of poor drainage include:
- Standing water and puddles.
- Moss and algae growth.
- Surface staining.
- Increased slip risk.
- Saturated bedding layers.
- Damage caused by repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
- Premature pavement movement or failure.
A paving surface should never be regarded as waterproof. Instead, it should be designed to manage water effectively throughout its life.
Create the Right Falls
The primary way to control surface water is by providing suitable falls across the paved area.
A fall is simply a slight slope built into the paving which encourages water to flow towards a drainage point. While these falls are usually subtle enough not to be noticed visually, they play an essential role in preventing ponding.
The required fall depends on the paving material being used.
As a general guide:
- Porcelain paving benefits from falls of 1 in 50 – 1-60.
- Smooth paving 1- 60 – 1-80.
- Riven and heavily textured paving typically requires slightly steeper falls 1-60.
- Cropped natural stone setts usually need the steepest gradients due to their irregular surface texture 1-40.
Where practical, falls should be built into every layer of the pavement construction, not simply corrected using the bedding layer. This creates a more consistent and reliable drainage profile throughout the pavement structure.
Direct Water Towards Suitable Drainage Points
Falls alone are not enough. Water needs somewhere to go.
Every paved area should direct water towards suitable drainage features, such as:
- Gullies.
- Linear drainage channels.
- Soakaways.
- Existing drainage systems.
- Other approved drainage outlets.
British Standard guidance recommends that at least one drainage fitting is provided for every 75 square metres of paving, or part thereof. It also advises that water should not have to travel more than 10 metres across a paved surface before reaching a drainage point.
In practical terms, this means larger patios, driveways and communal spaces may require multiple drainage points rather than relying on a single outlet.
Think About the Whole Pavement Structure
Effective drainage is not only about the finished surface.
Water that enters joints or bedding layers must also be able to escape. Where paving is built over impermeable materials such as concrete or asphalt, consideration needs to be given to how trapped moisture will be removed from the construction.
If water cannot drain away beneath the surface, bedding layers may remain saturated for extended periods. This can affect performance and, in warm weather, may even contribute to the migration of moisture and salts through the pavement, resulting in staining or efflorescence.
For this reason, British Standard guidance recommends providing secondary drainage where impermeable layers are present beneath the paving structure. This often takes the form of drainage holes, weepholes or other routes that allow water to escape.
Pay Attention to Low Spots
One of the most common causes of drainage problems is the presence of unintended low points.
These can occur due to:
- Poor site levelling.
- Inaccurate setting out.
- Settlement after installation.
- Failure to maintain consistent gradients.
Water naturally collects in the lowest part of any paved area. If those locations do not contain drainage features, ponding is almost inevitable.
During site assessment and construction, particular attention should be given to identifying and managing low points. Trial holes and visual inspections carried out during site assessment can often reveal existing drainage issues before construction begins.
Drainage and Accessibility
While drainage falls are essential, excessively steep gradients can create problems for users.
The challenge is finding the correct balance between effective drainage and usability. In most domestic situations, the recommended falls are sufficient to move water efficiently while remaining comfortable to walk across. Larger or more complex projects may require careful design to ensure accessibility requirements can be met at the same time as drainage objectives.
Check Drainage During Construction
Good drainage is not something that can be corrected at the end of the project.
Levels, falls and drainage positions should be checked throughout construction, including:
- Formation level/subgrade.
- Sub-base level.
- Base level.
- Finished paving level.
Leaving adjustments until the final paving stage often results in excessive bedding layer thickness, which can create performance issues later. British Standard guidance makes clear that falls should generally be built into the structural layers rather than relying on the laying course to correct inaccuracies.
Good Drainage is Good Paving
Successful paving should remain usable throughout the year, including during periods of heavy rainfall. Achieving this depends on more than simply installing drainage channels or gullies. It requires a considered approach to falls, levels, drainage locations and the movement of water through the entire pavement construction. As a general rule, there should be one drainage fitting per 75m2 of surface and water should not travel more than 10 linear metres without a drainage channel.
Before any excavation begins, think about where water currently goes and where it will go once the paving is complete. By incorporating effective drainage into the design from the outset, you’ll create a safer, longer-lasting and more resilient paved surface that continues to perform well for years to come.
