Cottage Path Made with Various Hard Landscape Materials
This is the result of a salvaging exercise carried out by David Stevens, in his own garden using only materials collected during clearance operations at a new home/old house that he bought with a view to carrying out the landscaping operations himself. One of my workers coined the phrase ‘scalvaging’ which is scavenging and salvaging muddled into a single word, and this struck me as pretty apt for David’s pathway.
As you can see, virtually any shape and size of hard landscape material can be included in a soil foundation rustic pathway.
All materials are bedded into compacted soil, with only a few of the ‘articles’ set into a mortar bed for better stability. It looks like an old lintel has been mixed in with two concrete fence posts along with a selection of bricks, walling stone and a range of different paving materials.
The whole project is genuine recycling and reclamation rolled into one. Very little new materials used (sand and cement) and no costs of removing off site, or importing new products.
The concept is to plant in between the joints, and cover both sides with herbaceous and shrubs which will soften the pathway so that it almost becomes invisible.
