Arrows on The Back of Porcelain Slabs
Usually found on the back of porcelain paving slabs and tiles, small arrows may be formed or etched within the slab. These indicate the direction in which the slab should be laid. These marks are the factory recommendation as to the orientation that the slabs should be laid.
Many slabs, even those that do not appear to have a ‘pattern’ will have been produced with very slight variations in colour that may not be immediately obvious to the naked eye, yet when laid over a large area, the slightest difference will become problematic to the overall aesthetics.
There may be a pre-determined pattern in the design, and the arrows are there as a guide. It is also a guide for loading the slabs into the kiln for firing, hence the importance of following the arrows when laying.
