Porcelain Paving Maintenance & Aftercare Guide – Cleaning, Care and Long-Term Performance

Porcelain paving is widely regarded as one of the lowest maintenance paving options available, but it is not a no-maintenance solution. Correct porcelain paving maintenance and aftercare is essential to prevent surface scratching, joint failure and long-term staining. This guide outlines routine and long-term care practices to help preserve porcelain paving and maintain its appearance and performance over time.

Porcelain paving may be considered the least troublesome of all paving products, due to its inherent highly durable and low maintenance capabilities. However, it should not be seen as a no-maintenance solution to good husbandry.

Routine Maintenance – Weekly or Monthly, Dependent on Site Conditions

Sweeping, by broom, or blowing with a machine, remove leaves, dirt and loose debris using a soft-bristled brush to prevent accumulation of particles that could scratch the surface.

Although porcelain is stain-resistant, remove all spills (oil, cooking fats, wine, coffee etc) with a cloth of paper towel to prevent discolouration from forming.

Do not use abrasive cleaners or metal scraping tools of any kind to avoid scratching the paving.

Longer Term Maintenance – As Required, According to Site Conditions

Periodically, wash the paving with a warm water solution containing a mild pH neutral detergent using a soft brush or mop, taking care to keep the head free from dirt and grit. Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners. Follow the manufacturers instructions at all times.

Rinse the area thoroughly with clean water after washing and remove any cleanser residue to prevent water marks.

If necessary, use a low pressure washer with a wide fan nozzle, keeping the head 600mm from the surface. Avoid jet washing the joints to avoid damage.

Continually observe for any cracks or damage within the pointing joints, and repair as necessary, using the same jointing product each time, following the manufacturer’s instructions, especially in regard to temperatures and moisture within the joints.

In snowy conditions, avoid clearing using metal shovels or scrapers. If required, use non-corrosive de-icing products. Avoid using salts or gritty aggregates.

If required, use dedicated black spot and algae remover, following the manufacturers instructions.

To ensure the longest possible life for your investment, keep a diary log of the site conditions and works programme undertaken.
