Sawn Paving Slabs – Maintenance & Aftercare Information

This maintenance and aftercare guide for sawn paving slabs has been produced to help customers protect their investment and ensure long-term performance. Sawn paving slabs — including sandstone, limestone, granite and similar materials — are widely used for patios, driveways, footpaths and feature areas. Due to their precision-cut surfaces and inherent porosity, they require specific installation methods and an appropriate maintenance regime to retain their appearance and durability.

Sawn paving slabs are typically cut on all six sides, with a fresh sawn face on the top and bottom. Because of this, they are more porous than riven materials and rely on correct installation practices, including the use of a bridge bond slurry primer and full mortar bedding. Without full contact between the laying bed and slab underside, moisture can migrate through the stone, resulting in reflective staining or patterning visible on the surface.

Routine Maintenance (Weekly or Monthly, as Required)

Sweeping
Regularly sweep the surface using a hand broom to remove leaves, dirt, grit and organic matter. This helps prevent staining and discourages the growth of moss and algae.

Stain Removal
Remove spills promptly, including oil, leaf tannins, sap, wine or coffee, using warm soapy water and a stiff brush.
Avoid chemical cleaners unless specifically recommended by the stone manufacturer.

Do not use acids of any kind, including vinegar or bleach-based products, as these can break down the stone surface and damage any applied sealants.

Annual Maintenance (Depending on Site Conditions)

Clean the paving as part of an annual inspection and remove any weed growth from joints or edges by hand. Avoid using metallic tools, which may damage the stone.

If required, apply a proprietary weedkiller suitable for use on natural stone, strictly following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Do not use moss killers containing iron sulphates, as these will cause serious staining and surface damage.

Occasional power washing may be used to remove stubborn dirt:

  • Use a low-pressure washer (less than 1500 psi)
  • Fit a wide fan nozzle
  • Avoid directing water jets into joints

A mild, pH-neutral detergent may be used where necessary.

Winter Care
Avoid de-icing salts, as these can cause surface spalling. If required, use soft builder’s sand instead.

Longer-Term Maintenance (As Required)

Continue regular cleaning and inspection, paying particular attention to joint integrity. Any cracking or breakdown should be repaired promptly to prevent weed establishment and water ingress.

Where appropriate, re-apply a breathable impregnating sealer to help protect porous sawn slabs, reduce moisture absorption and minimise colour fading.
Always test sealers on an inconspicuous area first to assess any colour enhancement or visual change before full application.

Important Note

All natural stone materials will change colour over time due to exposure to sunlight and weathering. These changes are a natural characteristic of stone and should not be regarded as defects.

For best results, maintain a simple maintenance log noting site conditions and works carried out.
