Aspect Ratio in Paving: Why Slab Dimensions Matter

Aspect ratio in paving describes the relationship between the length and width of a paving slab, flag or other paving unit when viewed from above.

For example, a 600 mm × 600 mm slab has an aspect ratio of 1:1, while a 900 mm × 300 mm slab has an aspect ratio of 3:1.

This matters because as a paving unit becomes longer in relation to its width, its dimensions, thickness, flexural strength and supporting construction all become increasingly important when determining whether it can safely withstand the loads placed upon it.

Why Paving Slab Aspect Ratio Matters

As a paving slab becomes longer in relation to its width, its dimensions have to be considered when determining whether its thickness and flexural strength are sufficient for the loads it is expected to carry.

This isn’t just good practice. BS 7533-101 takes the length-to-width ratio into account when calculating the required thickness of non-standard concrete flags and natural stone slabs.

It is particularly important with unbound construction. The paving unit is supported by an unbound laying course, and the pavement can accommodate some movement and deformation. The dimensions, thickness and flexural strength of the slab therefore need to be suitable for the expected loading. As the length-to-width ratio increases, the required slab thickness can also increase considerably.

Aspect ratio still matters with bound construction, although the paving unit is supported on bedding mortar. The design of the whole construction, including whether it is Bound System A or Bound System B, affects the thickness required.

Good installation is also essential. A long slab needs proper support beneath it. Voids, poor bedding, inadequate adhesion or movement within the construction can leave parts of the slab insufficiently supported and increase the risk of bending stresses and cracking under load.

This is particularly relevant today because we are using more large-format and long-format natural stone and porcelain paving.

So aspect ratio shouldn’t be looked at on its own. It needs to be considered alongside the paving unit’s dimensions, thickness, flexural strength, expected loading and the type of pavement construction being used.

Put simply, the longer a paving unit becomes in relation to its width, the more carefully its strength, thickness and supporting construction need to be considered.
